Rust, protruding welds, and scar-like surfaces collapse the distinction between an instrument imposed upon the body and the body itself. The hand-forged construction links the labor of fabrication to the violence represented by the restraints. I am interested in how structures of racial domination persist beyond their original historical forms and continue to organize the conditions under which Black bodies are disciplined, surveilled, and rendered disposable.
